Epica with Eluveitie and The Agonist
Corona Theatre, Friday, September 11, 2015

It was in a sold out theatre that was held the Epica with Elvueitie and The Agonist show last Friday. It was extremely hot and humid in the Corona, but this did not prevent the crowd to unwind to the music of these three bands. The atmosphere was at the height of euphoria and we could feel the public frenzy.

The evening began with the Quebecois band The Agonist. Adorned with their new singer, the band, which also played at Heavy Montreal this summer, shows a lot of enthusiasm on stage. Vicki actually repeated several times her joy to be on stage in her own town. The band played several songs from their new album and the audience was super responsive. Although it was early, the fans were very numerous in front of the stage and were happy to go wild on the powerful music of The Agonist. It was a great performance.

After a good 20 minutes of waiting, the band Eluveitie made its entrance on stage. The Swiss band likes to occur in Québec because they came quite often. Many were the fans and the atmosphere was strong. It must be said that the band of eight musicians on stage is pretty intense. Their folk metal music is enriched with violin, flute, bagpipes and hurdy gurdy. The group compositions are a mix of death metal with folk metal. There is a warlike power that emanates from their songs. Songs like King or Meet the Enemy are very strong. The band also has a softer register with songs like A Rose for Epona or L'appel des Montagnes (The Call of the Mountains) which the singer, Anna Murphy, sang in French. The latter addressed the audience in French and asked it if it wanted to sing with her. Obviously, the fans gave themselves tremendously. Another strong moment was when the song Havoc made the crowd jig dancing. Eluveitie set was 1:30 and I tip my hat to the singer, Chrigel, who also plays the flute, mandolin, among others. I was impressed to see him pass from the flute to growling alternately in some songs. I was breathless for him. The group finished on the popular song Inis Mona in an Encore which ended well their show.

Fans had to wait until 10pm to finally see Epica. It is with a palpable excitement from the public that the band appeared on stage. The band started strong with the songs The Second Stone and The Essence of Silence. It is with pleasure that the public welcomed the charming and coquette Simone. She is much more than that on the other hand; she is very talented and a has a divine and so powerful voice. She literally captivates her audience. Throughout the show, her voice remained sublime and she has a lot of interaction with the crowd, as the two guitarists, bassist and drummer. The latter, of his name, Ariën, delivered us quite an incredible solo on the drums. The main guitarist, Isaac, transports us with his quick and sharp solos. The second guitarist, Mark, who also provides growl vocals has a a powerful voice that merges well with the clean voice of Simone. The bassist, Rob, is very active on stage and exudes a passion for music. Unfortunately, the keyboardist Coen, could not be there due to family concerns.

The Dutch group gives itself on stage and their music is intense. Their symphonic metal songs style are beautiful and melodic, but also powerful. Unleashed is a good example. When the band played this song, the crowd went wild as the title says.  Obviously, the band played Cry for the Moon to the great delight of the fans and also played Unchain Utopia in the Encore with Terra Sancta and Consign to Oblivion. The light game was in perfect harmony with the songs. Some light sets were used to mark the accents in the songs and punctuated the intensity. Fans were delighted when Simone spoke to the crowd with a cute French accent. Everything to please her audience. Epica was perfect and everyone got home with beautiful melodies in mind. It was an epic show worthy of the band name.
