English Version :

Gorguts album critic.

Gorguts was introduced to the Québec metal scene in 1989 and quicky ganed importance by their style of music being a very techinical « death metal ». With 4 albums, 1 live and 1 compilation to their credit they’re now coming back stronger. After a 12 year hiatus they have signed with a new label « Seasons of Mist » and a new opus « Colored Sands », due to come out shortly , which I will walk you through piece by piece.

The album starts with « Le toit du monde » an extremely technical song with slower tempos here and there. The signer’s voice is very guttural but yet remains audible. It posseses a certain ambiance, I don’t know if it’s the way the mixing was done or the work of the bass but I would even say it sounds a bit indigenous. All in all a very good introduction. Then comes « An Ocean of Wisdom » clearly heavyer, much darker, the harmonious guitar and melodies are omnipresent, they set the song in a nice atmosphere without taking any of its power away. « Forgotten Arrow » in my opinion has a much more elevated technical level and progressive sound brought on by the mixture of slow and fast tempos all the while remaining dark with a deathlike attitude. Now moving on to the title piece of the album « Colored Sands ». It begins with a slow approach, transporting listeners into a translike state resembling of the « death doom metal » style and then picking up to their death preferences. A very good rhythm once it gets going. « The battle of Chambo » has an extremely Hollywood like introduction, you could even say theatrical and will maintain that theme throughout the whole piece. It’s followed by « Enemies of Compation » speed and death to your heart’s desire mixing in some « blast beats » but always keeping the technical and complex side they favor. « Ember’s Voice », distinctly darker and death with a sound that reminds me of many 80’s bands such as « Oblivion » even a little side of Voivod in it’s approach which makes for a very pleasant listening. « Absconder » is the second to last song. Keeping in accordance with the natural flow of the album, it’s dark and heavy, very thechnical with good sustained rhythms. Last but not least « Reduced to silence » starts up with a soft and quiet guitar sound that intensifies slowly and unexpectedly spews its venom accompanied by fast « blast beats », a sudden technical pause like few have been able to equal then it starts up again with renewed vigor. Solid « death metal » in all it’s technical glory.

This critic was a bit difficult for me to do considering I’m not accustomed to this style of music, I had to listen to it a few times in order to grasp all the subtleties. I have to say after 12 quiet years this one will be very much welcomed, they have definitely picked up where they left off and it will be greatly appreciated. The technical and complex sound of « Colored Sands » really brings to evidence the excellence of these musicians and the skillful way they control their instruments. Gorguts is back and ready to conquer the world.
