Festival Review: Trois-Rivières Metalfest 2015 (march 20-21 2015)

TROIS-RIVIÈRES Metalfest 2015

(english will follow)

Trois-Rivières becomes a place of metalheads rally in March since the last 14 years and that is thanks to the organizers of Trois-Rivières Metalfest. Samuel Landry is the head of that organization and he can be proud of the popularity of the event. Year after year, big names in the world of the metal scene come to perform on the stage of la Bâtisse Industrielle de Trois-Rivières. The festival also welcome smaller groups but equally popular for the fans. This year the event, held on March 20 and 21, allegedly had 16 groups of which the majority are from Quebec or Canada. But we also had the visit of the United States and Europe. The festival program included Outlying, Obliterate, Killitorous, Soothsayer, Augury, Cryptopsy, Terrorizer, God Dethroned, Bookakee, Ordoxe, Karkaos, Genetic Error, Benighted, Razor, Gorguts and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

I mentioned allegedly had 16 groups as one of the heads in poster was forced to cancel his performance. Indeed, the highly anticipated group Fleshgod Apocalypse from Italy was unable to travel to Trois-Rivières due to a strike of airports in their country. The group was genuinely frustrated and disappointed with this obstacle to their plan to come to deliver their show in the province of Quebec. This unfortunate situation, which is really out of their control, has not prevented the festival to continue with its programming. The Dutch group God Dethroned who performed his show on Friday offered himself to fill the shortfall on Saturday. It was a very generous gesture and frankly very friendly from them and made their fans more pleased by allowing them to see the group not once but twice. The festival organization has handled the situation very well by offering a refund on Saturday tickets. Fortunately, only about twenty people have asked to be refunded.

With the list of groups present at the Metalfest, we could expect two days filled with brutal and agressive decibels. We were actually fully filled throughout the weekend. The atmosphere was electrifying and although Fleshgod Apocalypse could not be at the rendezvous, the crowd was very festive. Surely warmer weather would have brought a wider audience but since spring is slow to show up, the room seemed a bit empty especially the first night.

For my part I was very excited to go to the la Bâtisse Industrielle de Trois-Rivières Friday, March 20 to begin the celebration, ready to get my hair shaken. The distribution list included Outlying, Obliterate, Killitorous, Soothsayer, Augury, Cryptopsy, Terrorizer and God Dethroned. Unfortunately I had trouble finding the place, so I missed the first groups, Outlying, Obliterate and Killitorious. I have nothing to say against the organization of the event that has done a very good job but posters to give an indication of the place would be appropriate for tourists like me.

The first two bands Outlying and Obliterate are the groups who started the ball and are from Quebec. The first one is even from Trois-Rivières. This was followed by the group of Gatineau-Ottawa Killitorous formed with Aaron 'Shredder' Homma on guitar, Eric Morotti on drums, Nick Miller on guitar, Eric Castilla on bass and Youri Raymond on vocals. This group of Technical Death Metal, I have been told, gave a good show. I was disappointed not to have heard them.

When Soothsayer arrived on stage, the crowd was ready to get wild.  The group from Quebec City played good Old School Trash.  The group has existed since 1985 and consists of the same members since their inception. Simon Genest on bass, Daniel Clavet on drums, Martin Cyr on guitar and Steven Whitton on vocals are still fit and gives a very dynamic performance. Martin Cyr even went through the crowd with his guitar.

We then had the pleasure of seeing the great performance from Augury. This band from Montreal plays Technical Progressive Death Metal was founded in 2002 and includes outstanding musicians. The talented Dominic 'Forest' Lapointe on bass, who was also the bassist of Beyond Creation, Mathieu Marcotte on guitar, Patrick Loissel on vocals and guitar and Stephen Gallo on drums were just amazing. The crowd was unleashed due to their complex and well rendered rhythms. We even had some exclusive new compositions to the great delight of the fans.

The public was already in ecstasy upon the arrival of Cryptopsy.  The band literratly put fire to the place. This group, which also comes from Montreal, enjoys an international reputation. The musicians Flo Mounier on drums and back vocals, Christian Donaldson on guitar, Matt McGachy on voice and Olivier Pinard on bass are amazing. Their energy on stage is contagious. The singer, who has a more than perfect pig squeal, holds an intoxicating charisma that gives you no choice to shake your hair. Their Technical Brutal Death Metal music was able to energize the place. The energy was at its peak for this first evening.

The first headliner of the evening made his entrance on stage with an excited audience. Indeed, this is the first time for the Death Metal and Grindcore group Terrorizer to perform in Canada and it's in Trois-Rivières that it happens. Following the announcement that Fleshgod Apocalyspe won't be part of the festival, the people were happy anyways to have the honor of seeing the famous band from Los Angeles, Terrorizer as a Canadian premiere. This band, which gave its name to the British famous magazine and which contains only three members, I must admit, made my jaw drop. They look shy, do not talk much during the meet and greet with the fans but once on stage, they are animals. It must be said that the group includes none other than Pete '' Commando '' Sandoval on drums who was the drummer of the famous band Morbid Angels.  He is supported by Sam Molina on bass and vocals and Lee Harrison on guitar. The sound quality has also improved at the time of the evening. The resonance of the bass drum was being felt even in our bodies. I found that the drum was taking up much space in musicality. I understand that the 'Commando' is appreciated as a drummer, but that is no reason to fade the other musicians who are also very good but a little erased due to the fame of the drummer. It was still a very good performance and the crowd gave herself over this violent music that makes you want to headbang.

The evening ended in the company of the great Dutch band God Dethroned. It is important to mention that the group did not give performances in recent years and came only for the Trois-Rivières Metalfest. The group even had an exclusive t-shirt for the event on which you can read below their name: Trois-Rivières Metalfest 2015 Tabarnak.
The frendly musicians of God Dethroned gave us a very interesting show. The group went through his Death Metal, his Melodic Death and his Blackened Death repertoire. Henri Sattler on vocals and guitar, Michael Van Der Plicht on drums, Ian Jekelis on guitar and Jaroen Pomper on bass all seemed very happy to perform for  the Trois-Rivières crowd who was still there to this late evening . The sound quality was good; the quality of performance of the musicians was good. The singer was communicating a lot with the audience. This is a very good band with passionate artists. Their music of Symphonic Death Metal was able to please the crowd and this has well ended the first evening of the 14th edition of the Trois-Rivières Metalfest.

Saturday, March 21, the temperature was unpleasant, but the crowd was still there at la Bâtisse Industrielle de Trois-Rivière to continue doing headbang to the sound of loud and extreme music. Saturday's cast included Bookakee, Ordoxe, Karkaos, Genetic Error, Benighted, God Dethroned, Razor and Gorguts.

The Montreal band Bookakee who was returning from a tour with Benighted, another group present for this Metalfest edition had the honor to start the second evening of the festival. We got a gore show on this Grindcore, Experimental progressive Death Metal music.  The evenings got a strong start to continue with Ordoxe, a group of Black Metal from Trois-Rivière with dark and powerful riffs and that made us discover new pieces from their latest album. A beautiful discovery from my part.

Then the crowd was warmed to host the Montreal group Karkaos.  This group is the only group of the festival including a woman and is also the only one to have made use of clear voice and keyboard. The group makes good Melodic Death Metal and the songs are well textured. The singer, Viky Boyer, made a great performance both emotional and strong. She is accompanied by Vincent Harnois on guitar, Norman Martel on drums, Sébastien Bélanger-Lapierre on keyboard, Eddy Levitsky on bass and Samael Pelletier on guitar. The group received a warm welcome with their great energy on stage.

The organization of the Metalfest made sure to leave us the honor of living the revival of the band Genetic Error. The Trois-Rivières band had not put on a show for 20 years. Very active in the 80-90s, the Old School Trash band was happy to get together and play in their own town. The crowd was completely turned on by their Trash with grunge influence old classics. André Lachance on bass and vocals, Stéphane Patry on drums, Mario Prud'homme on guitar and Alain Deslauirers on guitar have not lost their ability to make the crowl go wild. They were quite dynamic and engaging.

It was after this nice revival that came on stage the group from France, Benighted.  The group was ending their Canadian tour with Bookakee in Trois-Rivières.  This Technical Death Metal and Death Grind band blew up the building. The energy released by the singer is amazing. Extremely expressive, he goes barefoot on stage and spit out his explosive and brutal notes. He kept his promise to give us the biggest moshpit in the Festival. The group was doing Black Metal in its beginning and headed towards Death Metal, Grindcore thereafter. It includes Olivier Gabriel on guitar, Julien Truchan on vocals, Kevin Foley on drums, Pierre Arnoux on bass and backing vocals and Emmanuel Dalle on guitar. Their performance was exhilarating.

God Dethroned returned with a different set from yesterday. It is they who offered to play again, following the announcement that Fleshgod Apocalypse would not come. It was a pleasure to see them on stage again and this time with a bigger crowd. The audience appreciated the generous gesture of the Dutch group that likes to say Tanarnak to please the crowd.

Then followed a rare appearance on the Quebec metal scene, the legendary group of Canadian Trash Metal, Razor. The group from Ontario was formed in 1983 and specializes in Speed Trash Metal. The musicians Mike Campagnolo on bass, Dave Carlo on guitar, Bob Reid on vocals and Rider Johnson on drums are pretty impressive. They have a lot of energy and transmit it to the crowd. They played a set of their huge songs repertoire. Their rare appearance in Quebec made the event even more exciting for the fans.

The last group that closed the 14th edition of the Trois-Rivières Metalfest was the renamed group Gorguts. This is again a group that has long existed. The group from Richmond in the Eastern Townships exists since 1989 and announced a new album in sight. This is a group of international fame whitch plays Technical Death Metal. The only one who is among the distribution since the beginning, Luc Lemay is also the composer. He is on guitar and vocals, accompanied by Collin Marston on bass, Kevin Hofnagel on guitar and Patrice Hamelin on drums. Let me tell you that this is of great virtuoso’s musicians. Their Death Metal with mathematical, complex rhythms and riffs is made to perfection. The drum was so clean, it looked like a recording. People listened and watched carefully as if hypnotized by the talent of the musicians. We can be proud to have this insane group in Quebec.

This concludes this column on the 14th edition of the Trois-Rivières Metalfest which took place on 20 and 21 March in the industrial building of Trois-Rivières. The groups meet our expectations and have delivered a good show.  The event took place in a festive atmosphere despite the bad weather and the bad news of the cancellation of a great name, Fleshgod Apocalypse, a situation, which I repeat, was out of their control.

Hope to see you all soon, metalheads, I wish you a good evening.
(Due to a SD card problems, no photos of Razor and Gorguts, sorry)
