Anonymus was born of a group of friends in the late 80's to become a sacred monster in the Québec metal scene, a staple and as much people like to call them: the Megadeth from Quebec. It is true that their music is very powerful mixing Speed and Thrash metal with a particularity; the song is in French. This is not that common in the vast metal community on the globe. To date, Anonymus served us with six very good albums; the latest, État Brute, appeared in 2011. Four years have passed and now here is their new offspring which is called Envers et Contre Tous. According to the group, the album is the heaviest in their careers. So let's see for ourselves, the extent that this album could result in damage from headbanging.

It all starts with the song Tu es mes Démons that gives a good beginning, which suggests a breakneck pace and full of power. The rhythm is very fast and guitars, with their rhythmic changes, offers a gold coin to start the hostilities of this new album. Dieu Seul le Sait also begins with an extremely rapid rhythm to resume a more Thrash tempo thereafter. The voice of Oscar Souto is highly pitched and screamed, but highly effective. On the side of the drums, the rhythm is highly powerful but dynamic at the same time. Décrisse starts almost on a rhythmical very fast blast beat. As for guitars, what more to say then; extremely powerful.  This invites us to headbang without restraining ourselves. There are a lot of tempo changes, but the piece never loses its power. Envers et Contre Tous is the album title. It is a pure Thrash song with a hyper dynamic rhythm. A song that will surely be a hit on stage, with a guaranteed mosh pit. This is followed by the song Nous Sommes…, which includes the returns, after several years of absence with the band, the former guitarist and singer Marco Calliari. The latter has spent close to 17 years in the band. The song begins gently, almost in a baroque style with an hint of atheatrical side. But beware; this is far from a ballad! The song is really fast and also the longest of the album. What we can say is that the theme borrowed here is really a return to the source in the group's history. The guitars riffs are still very strong with solid solo pieces and what about the drums, which offer power out of the ordinary. Trahison is more atmospheric in its approach at first but quickly changes rhythmically to take us towards a horizon easily mixing Speed metal and Thrash. Carambolage offers us many tempo changes but is still effective with rhythm borrowed from the beginning of the album. The voice is strong and powerful and the mixing between the lead voice and the back vocals, often seen on this album, is simply sublime. De tout pour faire un Fou begins in a more Death metal style as usual. But do not worries, the Thrash side returns quickly. The piece is so fast, that even I, becomes breathless for musicians. We can still find several very solid tempo changes and super efficient solo. All that, with the drums never resting. This is another song tailored for the stage. Toujours Plus Mais toujours Moins is the before last piece of the album, which until now has left us no respite and that will not change with this song. Rather, here again, the band takes a very fast and very heavy track. Chaque Seconde Compte is the last song on the album and what better way to finish it off with. Again, that is a song that will conquer everything in its path. So why wait, because as the group says: every second counts.

During one of my meetings with Oscar Souto, a few months ago, while he was delivering a show with his other band called Dizzygoth, he told me that Anonymus next album would be their heavier and powerful one in their career and he did not lie. Here, we are entitled to enormous powerful Speed and Thrash metal. Ten smashing songs, many can be used on stage and do their immediate effects. The play of Carlos Araya on drums is just phenomenal and powerful, out of the ordinary. If we go toward guitars, one can only say; totally heavy at will and great solos. Even if the songs are in French, all remains fully accessible to all metalheads around the world. Because no matter what language they sing, here it becomes secondary. Even with Oscar Souto high shrill and powerful voice, the style and quality of the songs is simply masterful. Anonymus comes again to evolve and brings a new brick to the metal fortress which can represent this band..

My rating: 9/10
