Finale du concours “En Route Vers Heavy MTL 2014” avec Point Blank Rage, Red Skies, Karkaos, Eagle Tears et From The Deep- Live au Théâtre Corona Virgin Mobile- 09/05/14

English review will follow

Eagle Tears

Hal- Voix, Guitare, Harmonica
Steve- Guitare, Guitare Slide
J.B.- Basse
George- Guitare, Choeur
Bob- Batterie, Choeur

Point Blank Rage

Eric Marsan- Guitare, Voix
Julien Mercier- Batterie
Sylvain Arcand- Guitare
Francis Louis-XVI- Basse

Dommage.

From The Deep

Graham Cwinn – Voix
Michael Birch- Guitare
Jacob Sparling- Guitare
Dave Solomon- Basse
Nicholas Kaminski- Batterie

OOOOOFFFFF!!!!!

Conclusion

Cheers!

“En Route Vers Heavy MTL 2014” contest grand finale with Point Blank Rage, Red Skies, Karkaos, Eagle Tears et From The Deep- Live at Theatre Corona Virgin Mobile- 09/05/14

Whaaat's up metalheads, \m/iki Dom always present for Quebec-Metal on this evening that marks the end of a long road for our five featured bands... Tonight one of them will be crowned champion and will earn the honor to play among the greats of the genre at the prestigious Heavy Montreal festival! Let me tell you that nervousness was all over the place!

This year will be the 6th edition of the festival, a year of change, of rebirth if i might say, where the organisors decided to include punk rock bands to their performer's list... a choice that didn't please everybody... well... the “En route vers heavy Montreal' part has been created and put together by Dungeon Works Productions, an indy production company from Montreal alongside Evenko right before the third edition of the festival. They created the Apocalypse stage whom's goal was to feature quebec's metal local scene bands only... Great initiative that pleased both the public and the organisors!

The night was going to be... delicious! 5 bands from the quebec scene succession.. 5 bands on fire... 5 bands with the same goal... Impress the judges enough to win the prize! A fight for honor... A fight until the end... A fight that was ending tonight! I was impatient to see that... and I wasn't the only one!

With the public having a say in the outcome of the night, it made the odds even more interesting et daring!... Only thing left was to see who would be the people's champions!

Red Skies

C.Dodds- Vox
C. Legault- Lead Guitar
J. Furtado- Rhythm Guitar, Back Vocals
C. Hotte- Bass
M. Wilk- Drums

Red Skies is a young band from Montreal, they deliver a brilliant and energetic Metalcore and one thing for sure tonight they has the following. With the great Identitas 2.0 album in their pocket, the band knew exactly where to hit to please their fans... But they unfortunatly stayed very obvious in their performance and singer C. Dodds even almost tripped tangled up in his microphone wire at the beginning of the concert... nervousness... maybe but one thing for sure if this band wants to make it to the other level they will need to upgrade their stage performance which isn't very good.. a band with a promising future but that needs to better themselves...

Eagle Tears

Hal- Vox, Guitar, Harmonica
Steve- Guitar, Slide Guitar
J.B.- Bass
George- Guitar, Back Vocals
Bob- Drums, Back Vocals

Eagle Tears represents the modern 70's haha! Elephant pants, Gibson guitars, the legendary Thunderbass is what Eagle Tears is all about! It feels so good to see the return of the harmonica and three guitar attacks to the metal sound!... Three guitarist a great edgy sound for badasses! Eagle Tears delivers a very pure sludge metal... We can rarely say that a band wearing this style does it with authenticity and prestige but it is Eagle Tears case. They live and breathen their music they are true and full of talent. I'm very excited to hear what the band will lay on disc.. which is due summer 2014... A brilliant and well received performance that could win them the grand prize tonight

Point Blank Rage

Eric Marsan- Guitar, Vox
Julien Mercier- Drums
Sylvain Arcand- Guitar
Francis Louis-XVI- Bass

Point Blank Rage is a band from Montreal that doesn't need introductions on the local scene anymore with their more recent work Deadly Horizon that was released in 2012 the band has distinguished itself on many occasions. They played many concerts since the release of the album, so i'm not surprised to see them on the Corona stage fighting the final fight of this ferocious competition... But unfortunatly on my part Point Blank Rage leaves me very indifferent... they deliver a souless and lacking from interest death metal and tonight's performance was equal to the music... I do admit that having an army of soldiers on stage with them was a daring and original idea but if only these said soldiers would play a role in the show, some kind of story, instead of just staying there lifeless maybe it would help the performance... and don't get me wrong i'm not saying the band isn't good... it's actually the exact opposite... they are just unfortunatly very ordinary... they fit the mold and that's it... and tonight they definitly didn't deliver a performance that will lead them to the prestigious prize... Bummer...
From The Deep

Graham Cwinn - Vocals
Michael Birch- Guitar
Jacob Sparling- Guitar
Dave Solomon- Bass
Nicholas Kaminski- Drums

OOOOOFFFFFF!!!! What a performance!!!! From The Deep is a the band who won the Canadian portion of the contest... so hailing from Ottawa, Ontario let's just say that here in Montreal they were starting up with a big disadvantage... But they knew how to take their place and give a breath-taking performance! An intelligent and impressive musical craftsmanship and a unique sound. Djent isn't a genre that is loved, accessible or even understood by everybody... let's say it's even the opposite. At first I wasn't convinced cause sound wasn't very good and the performance took a while to lift up but when the beast woke up oh my god! We took it right in the teeth! I really can't wait to hear what the band will deliver at the release of their first album! A solid contender to tonight's glorious prize!

Karkaos

Véronica O Rodriguez- Vox
Vincent Harnois- Guitar
Samael Pelletier- Guitar
Eddy Levtisky- Bass
Sebastien Belanger-Lapierre- Keyboard
Normand Martel- Drums

Karkaos is a name we've been hearing since the last 4 years on the Montreal local scene and let me tell you this... we aren't done hearing it! Pumped by the recent release of their first full lenght opus, Empire, Karkaos does nothing but win fans over. This band is ready for the big leagues and they proved it tonight. “General Kaos” Veronica O Rodriguez leads the troops through battle with a breath-taking charisma blending brutality and charm, her presence on stage means that we will be entitled to a direct attack! With its front line consisted of guitarists Vincent Harnois and Samael Pelletier and the amazing Eddy Levitsky on bass this band is well armed to deliver a precise and powerful attack. Supporting the troops are keyboard player Sébastien Bélanger-Lapierre and the always very kind Normand Martel on drums... There's nothing left to say tonight Karkaos were the most professional band and they deliver a performance worth of the Heavy MTL and i hope will be crowned champions of this merciless battle!

Conclusion

Tonight's champions has been Eagle Tears and it is without big surprises their sludge metal as taken us by surprise and was very different from anything the other bands had to offer... a judicious choice without any doubts but i have to admit that i'm a bit disappointed cause i would've loved to see Karkaos glaze the stage of the Heavy MTL... Maybe next year who knows!

Tonight's show was a success on every level : excellent sound, excellent organization, an homogene show, a colorful show host, Michelle Ayoub, a well organized event very professional and fluid! I had a lot of fun and I hope i'll have the honor to be there next year once again!

With all that said thanks for reading my column and stay metalheads!

Cheers

\m/iki Dom
