The Book of Suffering - Interview with Cryptopsy

(English will follow)

The Book of Suffering – Entrevue avec Cryptopsy

I Am a Part of the Book of Suffering Tome 1».

I Am à Part of the Book of Suffering Tome 1».

The Book of Suffering – Interview with Cryptopsy

On a rainy Monday morning, I'm heading to the well-known Montreal recording studio, The Grid, to meet with death metal outfit, Cryptopsy and talk about «I Am a Part of the Book of Suffering Tome 1», the funding campaign they just started, So here's my interview with Flo Mounier (drums) – Chris Donaldson (guitar) and Olivier Pinard (bass)

Cryptopsy is well known internationally but could we start with what is Cryptopsy in your own words?

Flo: Cryptopsy is a death metal band from the province of Quebec, Canada born some 22 years ago and we play brutal music. It's hard to define Cryptopsy cause we had different era. All we can say is that we're still here cause we love to play music.

These days, you've launched a funding campaign called «I Am à Part of the Book of Suffering Tome 1». Could you tell us more about it?

Flo: if we decided to start this campagn, it's mainly cause we're not associated with a record label and also as a way to get some feedback from our fans. Nothing is easy these days in the music scene and as you know it, the music industry is facing radical changes so it's not easy to do it all by ourselves. What is asked for in our campaign is not much if you consider all the expenses of being in a band. So we're gonna take into consideration what our fans have to say and we will use the money to enhance our live performance and all aspects of our music delivery. As you know, we released an album in 2012 with our own money and we were impressed by all that it took and that's why we're asking our fans' help

In your campaign you talk about a serie of E.P., is there a number already determined?

Flo: I like the number 3 but nothing is all set . For now we have those 4 songs. We're very proud of this new stuff. It's Cryptopsy afresh.

Olivier: A trilogy would be nice. The new stuff is modern but don't think we changed to reach to younger incoming metalheads. This is some full proof  Cryptopsy no doubt about it but with a fresh twist. Jon being gone, it's me, Chris and Flo that compose now and it ended up a lot easier than we thought it would. We did these 4 songs and we could have gone for a full length if wanted to but instead of going for fill in songs to complete a full length as many bands do, we decided to work 4 songs and make sure we'd be happy to play them all live. We also wanted that with 4 songs, fans go for the replay button and get into them more and more.

Chris: I'm not sure if I'm out of tune here with the question but I'd say I like the image that with 4 songs, it's like when you eat something you delect but you have less than enough. Then you crave for more and more instead of having been stuffed to float your backteeth. With less, I lke that it makes you want more.

Could it be said it's a way to create a demand?

Flo: It's not a calculated shot on our part and releasing 4 songs was not done for this but it could do it. For us what matters is to put out quality music and doing it this way we had more time to write real good stuff and more time too to record and mix it. So we put as much time in 4 songs as we could have put in a full length but instead of getting more songs that are just ok, here in my opinion our 4 news songs are all unique and offer something to listen to.

Funding campaigns are more and more in the air these days, do you think it will give you the latitude you're looking for to do your things as you see it fit and do you think it is the best for bands now?

Flo: I would not say it is the best but willing or not to agree with it, nowadays and since several years, less people buy music. It's bad in the end if you look at the picture. Record labels and bands are struggling cause it's not as it was. Fans also pay for it cause as less albums are bought, the higher the tickets for show are sold. Instead of spending 10 dollars for the new Madonna, fans download it illegally and so will pay more for their show tickets. So instead of paying $100 they will pay $250 and even so, nobody gets anything out of it. Because of this kind of way to do business in the music industry, labels and musicians have to find some new ways to produce quality products. I know a lot of prog bands that don't bother producing new music cause they know they will spend one or two years writing and recording and in the end it won't give them anything more and so they forget about new stuff, rely on their old stuff and just wanna play live.

Chris: Funding campaigns may be a trend these days but as for all trends, it rises and then disappears. Funding works nowadays cause people are looking for an alternative way to get their music out there but I can't say this is THE NEW solution. In a couple years, it could be something else.

Flo: Something has to happen with the music industry. Right now, crowdfunding is just balm on open wounds. It helps a bit but it can't be THE solution to all problems with the industry.

Your campaign is called «I Am a Part of the Book of Suffering», will it be also the title of the E.P.?

Flo: No. The trilogy (or whatever the number of E.P. to come out) is called «The Book of Suffering». «The Book of Suffering»  is a title we brought forth during Lord Worm's time who's still close to the band and we asked him if it was ok to use it now that we feel it appropriate. He told us: Yeah go ahead, this is Cryptopsy's stuff. The first E.P. will be called Tome 1 and will naturally be followed by Tome 2 and Tome 3. I Am a Part of is added so fans get the feeling as it says that they're part of the project and don't just give money. We want them to know we will do things for and with them.

Talking about those pledges, items offered in counterpart are very generous.

Flo: We would offer more things but there's a maximum amount of items we can put on the page. For the next tomes, we will change the items offered. We want to give as much from us as from the band.

Chris: What's cool about our items is that we went for things that other bands don't think of or could not do anyway. I'll give guitar lessons; Flo will teach some of his drum techniques; i will also do a guitar solo on a band's album. You see that these are not the usuals. Even our old backdrops are offered if one of our die-hard fan want to have them. I also offer to mix a song for a band.

So there's a side to your campaign that will imply direct interaction with your fans?

Flo: Absolutely! We would also like to meet fans at concerts before the soundcheck cause a lot of them are intrigued and would like to see how it goes and exchange with us about it. It's a lot different than the concert.

When is the first E.P. coming out?

Flo: It will be at the end of the campaign, so in about 2 months.

So it means the songs are done?

Flo: Songs are ready. We need just to finish the whole package. For the songs, we wanted them to be ready right from the start so our fans would know what they're buying as we're gonna release some teasers.

Chris: If songs were not ready, maybe fans would have hesitated to pledge not knowing what they buy.

I just had the oportunity to listen to two singles from Tome 1. I can feel subtle variations in the atmosphere, are all songs going to fit in some kind of frame, follow a theme as they go on a serie of E.P.?

Olivier: Songs are not made following a concept or a theme tying them together but they are true stories or at least based on a true character.

We are talking about a serie of tomes, will they artworks show some ties together and reflect also a theme specific to each E.P.?

Flo: For the artworks, we're going to listen to our fans cause before, some liked our CD sleeves and some didn't. Essentially, it would be nice they relate all together so in the end we assemble them as a book.

Olivier: Yes, assemble them all together so they produce a nice boxset called «Book of Suffering».

Chris: I already picture the image of fans that bought the 3 tomes and then they buy the boxset to store them all in.

Outside of this campaign, what can we expect from Cryptopsy in the near future?

Flo: In the next few hours, we're leaving for the USA for about 2 weeks and a half. It's been a while since we went there so we do a short tour just to go see for ourselves what is our actual reach. This summer, we're doing some festivals like the Wacken Open Air in Germany and then after we will still have a lot of work to do like shooting a video. This fall, we would like to do a Pan-Canadian tour but nothing is set yet. After, we think of going back again to the USA, to Asia and Australia before the end of the year. In 2016, there's words about a tour with Suffocation and maybe Cattle Decapitation. Well we'll see then.

Before we end this interview, what would you say so your fans go and support your funding campaign?

Flo: We have a good and strong fanbase since the beginnings. The only thing I can tell them is: Go help us and you won't regret it. We're gonna be able to do more concerts in more places and tickets won't be pricy. I also think you'll really dig the new stuff. Next year, Tome 2 will be unveiled and if we all work together, everybody's gonna benefit from it.
