Motocultor Festival - Day 1 (august 14th 2015 - St-Nolff - France)

(english will follow)

Motocultor Festival 14 au 16 août 2015 – St-Nolff (Bretagne, France)
Jour 1

Motocultor Festival 14 to 16 August, 2015 - St-Nolff (Brittany, France)
Day 1

Leaving Montreal, Quebec, Canada to go either cover Metal Days or Wacken is already an asset but to be received in France for the Motocultor is an honor. The latter is smaller than the Hellfest in Clisson, but nothing prevents the quality to be there.

So I took the airport direction for a long journey of six hours 30 until France.  Arriving in Paris, I took two TGV to go to Vannes where a shuttle was waiting for festival-goers and we headed to St-Nolff. We arrived at the site with a slightly grey sky, but I found upon my arrival that the site was properly configured and that there were already a large numbers of fans.

With the colleagues from the French magazine Metalian, especially after some negotiations of their units, I have the honor to be invited in the volunteers camping for the festival. I set up camp and I fall into the arms of Morpheus due to the time difference.

Friday, August 14 is the first day of the festival and it is a rainy weather. Naturally in this text I will only talk about the bands I managed to cover as it was impossible to be everywhere at once. Everything should have started with Gutalax but because of a vehicle breakdown, musicians can’t present themself on time and will be rescheduled later in the weekend. I took the Massey Ferguscène stage direction for the French group Belenos, who with their Black Metal side opened the festival hostilities for Québec-Metal.  Despite some rain, fans are present and despite the short playing time they hit hard.  Immediately after, I headed to attend a band performance of whom I never knew existed, but who surprised me greatly. And I am talking about Psykup who have boundless energy on the Dave Mustage (main stage).  Now it is time for the legendary French band Killers to make its entry on the Massey Ferguscène stage, with a slight sound problem for its departure. The band demonstrates their talent, but also their high class Heavy Metal and here we are entitled to great classics from the band. Since the time I dreamed of seeing the band, now it is mission accomplished.

KILLERS

Ancient Rites is the first band coming from elsewhere then France that I see today. The latter who is from Belgium, which is not very far anyway, but hey, officiates in a much more extreme and powerful registry. Again, nothing was wrong with their performance that vaguely resembles what I have seen of them on their last visit to America.  After a short food break (well what a journalist should also eat), I immediately directed myself at the main stage to make a major discovery. Heart Attack, from France too, surprised me with their very powerfully played Groove Metal.  A performance that I will not soon forget and I hope to find their albums in Canada.  Sticky Boys is a band to categorize in the vein of Airbourne, Dance Laury Dance, which means; a very festive Rock Metal. They are just three musicians on the Massey Ferguscène, but I can tell you without a doubt, they offer a cheerful performance and take the entire stage. So far my remarks may have you believed that everything runs smoothly without any problems and that we are in the best of worlds? The answer is simple; yes it is true.

ANCIENT RITES

As the day advances, the rain made some havoc before the Dave Mustage stage, we had fun renaming it the Dave Mudstage because it has become extremely muddy in front of the stage for photographers. At least, the rain stopped eventually.  Also, as the day progresses, the crowd becomes larger in front of each of the three scenes. Solstafir who was in Quebec last April, aboards the Dave Mustage stage and as expected, offers a melodic beginning. This band from Iceland will give us a great performance. Electrical elements, banjo and even the singer who offers, as soon as he takes possession of his Flying V, facial expressions and positions to the enjoyment of a photographer eager for great pictures. A Show equals to their reputation. Aborted then took the course on the Supositor stage with its big Death Metal tinged with Hardcore. A mighty sound and an enormous power. One can easily say that musicians are in great shape. The songs of The Necrotic Manifesto are flowing superbly well and I would say that the band is more powerful live.

STICKY BOYS

Naturally, as you could see, as the day progresses the more I provided you with information about bands that are performing. The reason is simple; with all these French bands that I did not know it was difficult for me to elaborate more because I was in discovery mode. And I made beautiful discoveries, I would say. Finntroll members arrived on stage trimmed, as their troll image, with large ears. Again, the band will not disappoint and will provide a show to the extent of their reputation with lighting worthy of them. Both serious at times and other times all smiles; you can feel that the band is happy to be in front of a highly receptive Motocultor crowd to the Finnish trolls’ music. For the next group, I had a very difficult choice to make; see the crazy guys of Sick of it All or see Pentagram. Finally I throw my heart on Pentagram due to the fact that it canceled, like Sodom, its presence at Heavy Montreal last week.  Already knowing the band on CD, I was expecting a dark concert. The singer does not rejuvenate, but still retains its extremely psychedelic side and especially his crazy eyes.  The bands Doom metal flows very well.  Again it as a solid sound despite a few small sync mistakes from the guitar. It was an epic concert. I decided to skip my turn for Eluveitie. The reason is very simple, the band seems to have subscribed to Quebec and I've seen it too many times in the last 2 years.  In addition, it will be back next September in our region with Epica. So your host, here, is now fed up facing this band. Even trying to stay professional and objective, it no longer passes.

ABORTED

I finished my first day at the Massey Ferguscene stage with the Swiss band Triptykon (formerly Celtic Frost) and I will not be disappointed. Their dark Death Metal makes your veins icy. Despite the band powerful music, I am disappointed by the lack of movement on stage, except for the guitarist who is much more active that his acolytes. In terms of voice, Tom Gabriel Fischer is in great shape and we feel a great complicity between him and his bass player who exchange smiles at times.

PSYKUP

The first day ends with Triptykon for me and I can say that for a festival that does not accommodate more than ten thousand spectators per day, it offered a high quality day. So I imagine what awaits me for the next two days to follow. Until now I was treated with a hell of a quality sound on the three scenes with no real major problems and the schedule has been respected to the letter despite some small last minute changes (see beginning of the text). I have not yet spoken of the festival as such because I will keep everything to the end of the third day to get a better overall idea of the magnitude that is the Motocultor.
