Mass Murder Messiah is not at his first exploits in the world of Quebeckers metal. After releasing a full album entitled MIII (2011) and an EP, called The Rise of Evil (2013), here they come back with a new album entitled Born Again Apocalypse. This time a new singer, as some of you have known through Neuraxis band) adds a new flavor to the bands voice. With this new album, just by looking at the cover of the album, we already feel the wind of change. It is Colorful with a very well illustrated skull. Mass Murder Messiah is one of the most powerful bands in Quebec musically speaking with their groove-flavored Core.  So I look forward to present this new mischief.

With the first song entitled Antagonizer, I am completely destabilized by the song slowness and it’s almost doom style. It is an unusual character for the band as an album opening. Net Voice difference can be felt compared to previous albums. A powerful heaviness which at some point can make me thinks of the old Voivod, but Mass Murder Messiah version. The detunes guitars make a very good dark atmosphere.  Distress comes back on familiar ground with a rhythmical groove almost as Trash. As I stated previously, the more death voice style brings a new energy to the whole of the band's music. You can see the power of the battery and the super heavy guitars still very dynamic. Born Again Apocalypse is the title piece track and it begins with a light introduction. The song is slightly slower than the previous, but it doesn’t takes away anything in its power. It has really powerful and extremely heavy rhythm with guitar games here and there that make a wonderful atmosphere to the set. Detonate brings me directly to the originals I have known of Mass Murder Messiah. Fast pace, but with some more melodic passages. It is a good mix of groove metal and Trash. The back vocal accompanied by the main voice strengthens the whole. Always on the voice side; at times, the voice becomes clear. It is another nice piece of this new album. Goliath starts, too, with a voice intro. It begins very heavily; extremely death style voice, rhythmic battery sustained from beginning to end. The guitars are sometimes fast and sometimes slow. It is very easy to feel the evident heaviness in the song.  We were not used to this from the band before. Infamous is in two parts, the first is The Uprising. The rapid rhythm is really heavy. I can easily realize several changes in rhythm level. At some point, it touches Trash metal while having a slow and heavy groove. On the voice side; everything remains very close to Death Metal. Guitars are damn effective immediately, the second part of Infamous starts without warning.  This part is called Rebels Unite where I recognize the Mass Murder Messiah paw from the past but with a voice that grants the metal groove as a bonus which the band likes to share with us. The heavy and powerful back vocals brings more to the whole song. It is really nice to listen to. Devilbound remains in the same line; heavy, groovy and slow without taking away the power it gives off.  Very atmospheric at due to the guitars that have many changes of rhythm but especially in the sound they make. It all ends with the song Death Row. This one is atmospheric and has effects here and there through the soundtrack incorporated initially. Everything is there; heaviness, speed, steady rhythm, a custom piece to complete a pure effusion of excellent groove metal.

Here Mass Murder Messiah comes to surprise us with a new album that is filled with novelty and shows us the band evolution. We just have to think about the slowness and heavyness for certain parts from the beginning. Another change comes from the side of the voice. Before it was easy to recognize a core side to it, but here when listening, we quickly recognise death style, even if the band originally did not play Death Metal, but rather a powerful mix of groove and Trash metal. The pair guitarist demonstrates their talent and power plays. In terms of the drums and bass; one feels the power field and the impact they have on all the songs. It is a talented band where all instruments play their roles to perfection, and a powerful and efficient production. Born Again Apocalypse aptly named because the band has just reborn, and will bring the Apocalypse either on CD or on stage guaranteed.

My Rating: 8.5 / 10
