Pour le reste, nous avons eu droit à des chansons de l’album The Dark Ride (Steel Tormentor, Mr. Torture), de l’album The Time of Oath (Forever and One, Power et Before the War en rappel), de l’album The Power of the Ring (Where the Rain Grows), de l’album Straight Out of Hell (Waiting for the Thunder, Straight Out of Hell) ainsi que plusieurs chansons des albums classiques Keeper of the Seven Keys 1 et 2 comme I Want Out et Future World, en rappel.

Helloween with Them and Potion 13
Corona Theatre, Montreal, February 28, 2016

It is rare to see Power Metal in Montreal.  Recent years have not been glorious to this metal style compared as was the case in the 90s. By cons, Germany is a country that has kept this style alive and it is with pleasure that we received in our city, the cult band Helloween, the Power Metal precursor. The band released a new album in 2015 and is since on tour. It was passing in the beautiful province with Them, from the USA and Potion 13, a band from home.

It is actually Potion 13 that opened the evening. The Corona was not full, but there were enough people to make a good crowd in front of the stage. Brian, the guitarist, made reacting the crowd immediately with his explosive energy. Despite some technical problems with his guitar at the beginning of the first song, he kept his fine presence throughout the show as well as all the other musicians. The bands members always show a strong presence and a beautiful complicity on stage. Danielle's voice was beautiful despite the fact that she was taken with a bad flu. When the songs Fuck the World and La Mort played, the crowd was given itself heart-fully by singing the words with her. Despite a short set of 20 minutes, Potion 13 has set up a good mood in the place with their catchy and rhythmical Heavy Metal, Hard Rock songs.

After a short 15 minutes break, the American band Them has entered with a quite entertaining theatrical scene setting despite the lack of space on the stage. In a cemetery decor, the costumed singer began the show by reciting a curse on a coffin. The characters of priests and witches enter and leave the stage to come support the songs. Despite the good sought theatrical aspect, it would be valuable to further the idea of the dramatic staging because I'm not sure I understood the story line. Still, it was very exciting. The singer kept his role as a kind of intriguing sorcerer throughout the show. He is accompanied by a guitarist, a bassist, a keyboardist and a drummer. The latter is a true beast on his machine and ensures the frantic rhythm of the songs. The melodies of the guitar and bass are great and powerful. The keyboardist supports and amplify the melodies and brings atmosphere to the songs. The singer has a quite impressive record of vocal ranges. He has a bewitching voice that can be very acute in the style of King Diamond. The band doesn’t hide from being a tribute to the later. The band's name is actually the name of King Diamond third album. Nevertheless, the band composes it’s own songs. It was a very refreshing and startling performance. Them was a pleasant discovery for me.

Helloween fans became excited in front of the stage singing the band hymn. We could feel a general frenzy while waiting for the cult Power Metal band. The band started his show with Eagle Fly Free and Dr. Stein of the Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 album. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 and Part 2 are the albums that defined Power Metal style, so it was a good idea to start the show with those songs. Fans, finally satisfied to hear the epic, fast and harmonic melodies that explain what that style of metal is, began to sing and did not stop until the end of the show. The band dipped into the wide range of albums it has and played three songs from their latest album, either; My God-Given Right, which is also the title of the album, Heroes and Lost in America.

For the rest, we were treated to songs from the album The Dark Ride (Steel Tormentor, Mr. Torture), from the album The Time of Oath (Forever and One, Power  and Before the War in the encore),  from The Power of the Ring album (Where the Rain Grows), from the album Straight Out of Hell (Waiting for the Thunder, Straight Out of Hell) and several songs from the classic albums Keeper of the Seven Keys 1 and 2 as I Want Out and Future World in the encore. The band made its traditional song medley including Halloween, Sole Survivor, I Can, Are you Metal and Keeper of The Seven Keys which was a evening highlight.

The singer, Andi Deris, is very dynamic and interacts extensively with his fans. He made an emotional speech explaining the dramatic structure of the song My God-Given Right, which is a hot topic and he spoke a few words in French. He sings his songs with a full and round as well as a shrill and powerful voice. He has a great energy on stage as the other musicians who are all very talented and professional. The two guitarists, Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner, play beautiful, fast and effective melodies in complicity . The bassist, Markus Grosskopf, accompanies perfectly with his well played and present rhythms and melodies and the drummer, Daniel Löble, is simply amazing with his crazy and skillful rhythms.  He also made a stunning solo before the very rhythmic piece Where The Rain Grows which was another highlight. Helloween gave an excellent show that fans will not soon forget. The quality of the songs, the technique of the musicians and their beautiful stage presence makes this band a German gem.
