Review: Within Temptation (live in Montreal, oct 5th 2014)

Within Temptation avec Amaranthe au Metropolis
Par Isanielle Enright
(english version will follow)

Quelque chose me dit qu’ils seront toujours bien accueillis ici. C’est quand vous voulez!

Within Temptation. Sharon den Adel: Voix claire | Robert Westerholt: Guitare et voix gutturale | Ruud Jolie: Guitare | Stefan Helleblad: Guitare | Jeroen van Veen: Guitare basse | Martijn Spierenburg: Clavier | Mike Coolen: Batterie

Within Temptation and Amaranthe at Metropolis
By Isanielle Enright

Sunday was expecting us with a lighter formula with the visit of Within Temptation and Amaranthe at Metropolis. Visiting Canada for only two nights, the European combo brought with it a powerful and intense power metal.

Amaranth. Elize: Vocals | Henrik: Vocals | Jake E: Vocals | Olof Mörck: Guitar and Keyboard | Johan Andreassen: Bass Guitar | Morten Sørensen Løwe: Battery

The Swedish metal band, often referred to as pop metal, Amaranthe surprises with its trio of singers, a guitarist who is also a keyboardist, a bassist and a drummer. They were visiting Montreal for the first time since their debut in 2008 and apparently no one gave them the memo on the craze for power metal in the area. The crowd was cheering them so much that they had trouble talking in between songs and could only stand there in disbelief before playing again.

At first glance, three singers on stage at all times may seem too much, but Elize, Henrik and Jake have successfully delivered a poignant performance, almost theatrical. Even when they were not singing, we could feel the unity of their voices, which made it all really entertaining. I was a little afraid that they would fall in a “taking turns” pattern but it didn’t take them more than a song to establish their showmanship. Elize’s higher pitched lyrical volutes well complemented Jake’s more operatic approach, the overall was spiced up by Henrik’s shredding guttural lines and these vocal harmonies were supported by a metal crossbred with electro and pop music.

The versatility of the musicians and their natural ability to make their stage presence felt made for a very enjoyable show. While showcasing their new song, Trinity, Olof and Johan even playfully teased each other by playing on each other’s guitar necks. They would relentlessly run from one end of the stage to the other and won the crowd by both their undeniable talent and the obvious good time they were having playing live for us. of the scene without stopping and sû win the crowd with their talent, but also by their obvious pleasure to interact with it.

The pace slowed towards the end of their set with Amaranthine, a melancholic song, before finishing in style with their new single, Drop Dead Cynical and their timeless hit, The Nexus. Astonishment still painted on their faces at the end of their performance, they promised to return to Montreal soon. Something tells me they will always be welcome here. Whenever you want, guys!

Within Temptation. Sharon den Adel: Clear Vocals | Robert Westerholt: Guitar, guttural vocals | Ruud Jolie: Guitar | Stefan Helleblad: Guitar | Jeroen van Veen: Bass Guitar | Martijn Spierenburg: Keyboard | Mike Coolen: Drums

Well, this band is quite the crowd! Within Temptation dropped their music on the Metropolis like a ton of bricks, starting with their epic single,  What About Us. The Dutch formation was obviously aiming to impress and the response of the crowd, already conquered by Amaranthe, was immediate. Dressed like a fairy of darkness, Sharon spoke in French in between songs, which pleased the audience even more.

What surprised most with Within Temptation, it was the unity of the band on stage. All musicians and singers presented their songs together. This band is no traditional “female fronted” metal band where it’s all about pushing the singer’s looks up front and the musicians in the back. Sharon is gorgeous, yes, but it's even more inspiring to see that the group is capitalizing on everyone’s talent first and foremost. And talent she has! She went from the semi-raspy sultry voice of Let Us Burn to the clean fragile tone of Silver Moonlight with ease and grace, while the team of musicians ensured the arrangement with a level of mind blowing mastery. Within Temptation’s musicians gave off the impression that music was in their genes, like their art was a second nature to them.

We also got to see a more political side of the band, who took the time to explain the concept behind the song Edge of the World before performing it. Indeed, the group claims to have composed this song in response to the increasing repression in our societies, the loss of freedom of expression and discrimination, while attempting to make this particular piece a unifying anthem for everyone. They then turned towards a lighter subject with Summertime Sadness before returning to faster rhythms. They really made us visit the full range of their discography through a concert extremely well put together and an undeniable passion for live performance.
