Review: Dark Tranquility live in Montreal (Jan 9th 2015)

Dark Tranquility @ Snatches Electric with guest

It’s in a packed bar that I made my entrance Friday to attend Dark Tranquility’s concert.
The Foufounes Électriques opened the doors of the second floor pretty late and until then the entire crowd was condensed on the ground floor. I must say that it was not that unpleasant to be able to have a beer while waiting in line but the fact remains that the whole lineup of the night was going to be performing later than planned. I overheard through the chatter that it was because the soundcheck had started around 4PM and most bands had a rough time getting here because…you know…Canada. The doors were finally opened around 8 while the Black Label Society show was already going full swing right next door at the Metropolis. Whatever, the wait was totally worth it. Besides, I wanted to cover Dark Tranquility not only to see the band live, but also to highlight their respect for the local metal scene. Except for Insomnium, every support groups were local metal bands.

Aeon's Fall ripped open this evening with a set that was cut short but highly explosive to present their new singer. It was his first stage performance ever, I was told, and by the looks of it this guys has many more memorable shows to give. They quickly left the stage to Valfreya but they still had the opportunity to show a nice sample of their discography and even completed their section with a guest artist at the violin.

I admit I was surprised by the list of groups when it was first released. Valfreya seemed to stand out with its folk metal bathed in all this melo-progressive. The group is not bad in itself, but the combination seemed a little mismatched. They still delivered a very good performance and the crowd seemed to enjoy this detour to a more festive kind of vibe. It was obvious both on stage and in the crowd that they are right at home in Montreal and they were welcomed with open arms like an old friend we had not seen for a while. If you still do not know Valfreya (a. You live under a rock no wifi b. One of your friends knows them. C. Do yourself a favor and follow the links below to go listen to them)

It's still at Hollow’s set that the show really began. The energy of this band is facemeltingly unbelievable and the accuracy of their live sound quality on the verge of being ridiculous makes it one of (if not THE) Quebec band expected to break through the international metal scene. The performance they delivered last Friday was pure evidence. The likes of Dimmu Borgir and Caragh Angren of this world, Hollow presented a symphonic black metal with flawless virtuosity that proved to be an instantaneous crowd pleaser. It is therefore not surprising that their latest album, Mordrake, finds itself in the 2014 Québec Métal top 10 and that it has been nominated for metal album of the year at the GAMIQ awards, recognition that is fully deserved especially as the live rendering of their compositions proves to be a delight for both eyes and ears. The $ 35 ticket was worth every penny if only for getting to see Hollow on a stage.

The time it took to go get myself a beer, chat with some friends met there and Insomnium was already climbing up the planks. Of the whole lineup, this was the one band I knew the least and it definitely proved to be a great discovery for me. After giving a good listen to their discography in preparation for the show, I could see that the live performance is more aggressive than what is on the album and there were a lot less effects and synthesizers in the vocals and guitars. Some will find that this to be a negative point and I usually would agree. Maybe it's because my ears are pretty new to Insomnium’s discography but I enjoyed the difference between the performance and the studio album. It's a two in one formula, two equally valid approaches in the same project. Their melodic death definitely had its place as an opening act for a Dark Tranquillity concert and I promise myself to go see them the next time they play in town, with a set of more experienced ears. A great discovery in this early part of 2015 and if you want to discover or learn more about the band, visit the following pages. You know you want to.

Ah, Dark Tranquility, or when we already know that the show is going to be good before it even started. The Swedish ban simply has it all. The heavy riffs and crazy rhythms perfectly blend with the more melodic lines of the keys and guitars. The voice of Mikael Stanne, still sublime 25 years into his singing career, danced between clean and growled vocals with perfect control, grace and intensity. While they are now headed west for the rest of the Canadian tour, the quintet seemed to have a special affection for their Montreal fans as they stated many times throughout the evening. Not only was the admiration obviously mutual, but I also overheard several times how people were pleased that they had decided to play the Foufs instead of a bigger venue. I would not have been surprised to see the formation headline at the Club Soda or Metropolis, but the more intimate and close atmosphere of the Foufs ended up making this evening something absolutely special for everybody. A band to see live again and again, Dark Tranquility offers an unparalleled stage performance that has something to please fans of all metal subgenres through its intricate arrangements delivered to perfection with boundless energy.
