Chaos Raids North America 2015
1349 with Necrophagia - Vattnet Viskar - Point Blank Rage
Monday, June 1, 2015, Foufounes Électriques

For a rainy and cold Monday, what better than to go to a Black Metal show?  At les Foufounes Électriques was held the Chaos Raid North America tour that included the bands 1349 Necrophagia, Vittnet Viskar and Point Blank Rage. That was where you had to be if you wanted to submit to absolute musical violence.

The Quebec band, Point Blank Rage, started the evening with a not very full house.  Still, the band gave itself totally, especially for the bass player who was moving his bass handle rather dangerously for people in front of the stage.  The singer launched his notes in a deep growl that awakened the public.  The Death Metal music played by Point Blank Rage, which can remind us of Cannibal Corpse, has managed to please the crowd and some seemed to know this group who exists since 2006 and has two albums to his credit. It's always hard to start an evening, so congratulations on the excellent performance!

After the previous group drum kit removal, Vattnet Vikar, from the United States arrived on the stage.  The members of the band seemed very calm before beginning their performance, but as soon as the first note starts, the musicians became show beasts. The guitarist, in particular, showed an insane look and hypnotized us with his eyes and repetitive mechanical dance. The singer screamed his rage accompanied by heavy and dark riffs of his guitar and the other guitar. The group compositions are in an atmospheric Post Black Metal style. The melodies are grim, melancholic and have beautiful riffs and excellent guitar solos. Vattnet Vikar has delivered a great performance and I'm glad to have discovered them.

The second floor of the Foufs was fuller for the arrival of Necrophagia on stage. The musicians entered in a staging that reminds gore horror movies.  Actually this US band is the pioneer of the Horror Metal music style and is also one of the first American Death Metal band.  After an almost 10 years break, the group has revived and has since released 5 albums, their latest being WhiteWorm Cathedral.  Their music is a tribute to horror movies. The singer, Killjoy, has actually dedicated a song in honor of the director Lucio Fulci. Killjoy uses parts of bloody mannequins as scenic accessory to bring us even more in the gore atmosphere. The band's music comes straight to you in the face and the crowd was wild during the performance. The two guitarists and bassist do not move much on stage, but the songs are well executed and possess frantic rhythms on drums. The good old Death Metal!

The atmosphere begins to accumulate and we feel a certain excitement in the air. The public eagerly awaits the arrival of 1349.  The band members enters on stage one after the other in a low-lit atmosphere, dominated by red lights. The musicians begin the first notes and already, we enter in a gloomy, melancholic and cold atmosphere unique of that style of music that is Black Metal.  Finally, Ravn enters the stage and launches strident and dark notes worthy of giving us the scares. The musicians represent the Norwegian Black Metal style well. They are disguised with the traditional corpse paint and they have a kind of mysterious stage presence. Ravn is quite impressive; he looks very tall and has this kind of great aura that makes it difficult to watch the other musicians. The bassist, Seidemann, wears a ghoul and can remind us of the Emperor in Star Wars. He gives us heavy and strong notes while keeping his enigmatic character. The guitarist, Archaon, plays his dark and powerful riffs and is always active on the stage. Drummer, Jon Rice (former Job for a Cowboy), who replaces Frost for the tour, was worthy of the rhythms style found in Black Metal.  Frost is a famous drummer in the Black Metal community and contributed to the drum rhythms style of this musical gender. He left a diffcult task for Jon Rice. This one has been able to deliver a very strong performance behind his war machine. Throughout the show, the musicians remained in their obscure and allegorical universe and have kept the audience interested during their performance on stage. Several tracks from their latest album Massive Cauldron of Chaos have been played but the group also dogged into its older songs. 1349 gave a very good performance; the audience reacted to its anti-religious and apocalyptic music by forming mosh pit unabatedly. Violence and darkness was present everywhere!
