Review: Judas Priest (Live at Casino Rama, Rama, Ontario, Oct 7th 2014)

Judas Priest live au Casino Rama, Rama, Ontario avec artiste invitée: Steel Panther, Oct 7th 2014
(english will follow)

Judas Priest live at the Casino Rama, Rama, Ontario with guest: Steel Panther, Oct 7th 2014

It’s early on October 7th that I met with my partner on this trip, Alain Labonté from Quebec-Metal (whose pictures I used to illustrate this text. You can see all his pictures by clicking the following link for Judas Priest and Steel Panther to head west for a 6 hour and a half road trip to Rama, Ontario… where…? Rama in Ontario on the east side of Lake Couchiching, about an hour north of Toronto. First thing that struck us as we got there was that the Rama Casino is an imposing but great looking structure adorned with Chippewas paintings. The inside recalls the same universe with its decoration and I really liked that the column of the hall of the building are like totems. We went to the ticket office where we were met by a nice lady who got us our access and photo pass (for which we thank the organisers of the event) and headed for the waiting line having about half an hour before door opening scheduled for 7h00PM sharp. While we were waiting, the magic of being a little community and sticking to it worked again and we had the chance to meet with Ingrid Newton, from Metal Masters Kingdom and her friend. Go check this metalzine.

As 7 o’clock ticked, the door open to yet another nice looking space, unfortunately too “chic” to allow us to bring our drinks in the concert hall. Well tough luck, it would be a dry concert. I could understand with all the chairs lining the floor that moshing beer glass in the hand would not be. Anyway, another nice lady led us to our seats and it was time to get ready as the speakers were entertaining us with some AC/DC, Bon Scott era.
At 8h00PM, AC/DC was replaced by Steel Panther’s show musical intro and they got thir spot on stage that still remained in the dark. Lights on and here they go with “Pussywhipped” first track on their latest album, “All you can eat” released earlier this year.
Going from left to right, Michael Starr had soon spotted the Pantherettes in the crowd. I had three of them on my left jumping, dancing and signing all the lyrics, all dressed up like the band and wearing… blonde wigs. I should say that with all the front rows packed, Steel Panther had gathered their load of fans (that had to be pushed back to their seat as the real ticket holder were getting in) and they were really into it. Girls were waving their hands in search of the bands attention and there was even a girl argumenting with the security so they let her bring a little fashion mirror to Lexxi Foxx. Into it, that’s what I call it.
The opener was followed as on the album by “Party like tomorrow is the end of the world” and then it was time for their stand up comic presentation, mostly what i’d heard in 2013 at Heavy Mtl but who cares, it’s fun, and at the same time, crowd reaction are always enthusiastic. Satchel, apart from all the s**t he says, took time to say he was kinda anxious the night would be lame with all these chairs on the floor but had to admit he was impressed by the crowd reaction and energy. I have to add that there’s a lot of these chairs that were nearly not used all night.
Steel Panther offered us a well balanced set digging in equal parts in their last three albums, as their “explicit lyrics for adult” songs where met with a great reaction as much as their spoken interventions that allow Foxx to remake up his composure. Steel Panther performance was top notch and you can be sure the crowd was feeling hot for the rest of the night. For those wondering, no we were not “boobed” even though Starr tried his best to make it happen.

They rised a curtain with Judas Priest’s logo on for the gear change up so mystery remained but intermission’s end was kind of called by the music change as Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” replaced the AC/DC replay. Electricity filled the air as curtain drop was expected. “Dragonaut”, first title of their 2014 album, “Redeemer of souls” started the set as Faulkner, Tipton and Hill walked on stage to join with Travis already on duty behind his drum while a video projection was filling the back screen. Halford arrived with the first verse of the song, dressed like a metal king in his long leather coat adorned with chains. A classy act for an outstanding singer that would prove that his voice stood the passage of time as well as their songs. And to prove it, they got right into their back catalog going as far back as 1976 with “Victim of changes” from the album “Sad wings of destiny”. This song confirmed that Halford was ready for a great night, there’s some high pitch parts in there that were met perfectly. As for his fellow members, needless to say they were flawless in their execution as much as they stand out by their imposing presence on stage, guitars upfront and rythm section at the back while Halford was walking around them, spotlitting the solos. WOW!! For two old metalheads like Alain and I, and for a good part of the crowd wearing grey hair and Judas Priest t-shirts, it was a roaring start.
They brought back their new album with three songs, “Halls of Valhalla”,”March of the damned” and title track “Redeemer of souls” interspersed with two songs, namely “Love bites” from the album “Defenders of the Faith” which celebrates its 30th anniversary and “Turbo lover” from the album “Turbo”. I have to comment here on the beauty of the video projections and as I’m in superlatives, I have to say that it was the best sound I’ve heard in a concert in my whole life. It was awesome. A real pro job.
Now that they had revisited all there different era of existence, Halford took some time to tell us that Judas Priest have been rocking for now more than 40 years and that they were proud of playing British Heavy Metal following with “Beyond the realms of death” from 1978′s “Stained class” which he introduced as a “ballad with a powerful message”.
The rest of the night would bring us many more hits (and many more coats as Halford wore at least 10 different ones through the set) and we could enjoy “Jawbreaker” followed by “Breaking the law” where Halford told us he would take a break and let us sing the verses as we turned the microphone towards us. Naturally, there was also this moment where Halford ride his motorbike on stage, this time for “Hell bent for leather” as Motorcycle Club Badges flashed on the back screen, ending the song with the “Judas Priest 1%MC Birmingham” badge.
That was time for a little break as all musicians left the stage but Halford stayed with us and did some voice exercises with the crowd. They came back with “You’ve got another thing comin’” and when Halford said “Goodnight” at the end of the song, I thought this is it seeing everyone leaving the stage again but… Travis preparing us for a second “encore” made of “Living after midnight” et “Defenders of the faith” that saw Hill get front stage for the first time of the set as he played all night from a spot at the back besides the drum. They said a final goodnight and left under screams of “Freewheel burning”, “Screaming for vengeance”, “Some heads are gonna roll” and all those not played fans would have loved to hear. I must say that with such a long career and so many hits throughout the year, it is definitely impossible to play them all in a set of around 1h30 and I’m quite sure that fans were nonetheless happy of what they were served and went back home with a metal grin on their face. This concert was a success. I have to tip my hat to the Rama Casino that made of this sold out evening a very enjoyable experience with quality sound equipment professionally handled. Just to tease you a bit, metalheads, Alice Cooper will be performing at the Rama Casino on October 30th. I’m sure it will be another evening to remember.
