Review of Iced Earth (Montréal april 16th 2014)

Iced Earth and Special Guests Live
Théâtre Corona Virgin Mobile
16/04/14

English review will follow

Iced Earth a suivi à 21h30.

ReVamp:

Floor Jansen: Voix
Arjen Rijnen: Guitare
Jord Otto: Guitare
Henk Vonk: Basse
Ruben Wijga: Clavier
Matthias Landes: Batterie

Sabaton:

Joakim Broden: Voix
Thobbe Englund: Guitare
Chris Rörland: Guitare
Par Sundström: Basse
Hannes Van Dahl: Batterie

Iced Earth

Stu Block: Voix
Troy Seele: Guitare Lead
Jon Schaffer: Guitare Rhytmique
Jon Dette: Batterie
Luke Appleton: Basse

Même Last December m'aurait fait plaisir... Et où étaient Stormrider, Travel in Stygian et The Last Laugh?

Conclusion:

Cheers!

Hey what's up metalheads! Here's \m/iki Dom, for Québec-Métal, on this incredible metal night featuring ReVamp, Sabaton et Iced Earth.

It's around 18h20, after an exciting but tiring waiting period due to this winter weather even on april 16th that the doors of the Corona finally opened. A calm mood took place, doubled by the impatience to let ourselves go to the heavy sound of the instruments of our three featured bands. The show started with Revamp at 7:30. An hour later it was Sabaton's turn to take the stage. Iced Earth followed at 9:30

ReVamp:

Floor Jansen: Vox
Arjen Rijnen: Guitar
Jord Otto: Guitar
Henk Vonk: Bass
Ruben Wijga: Keys
Matthias Landes: Drums

It was finnish band Nightwish's new singer who held the microphone for ReVamp. I was seeing her live for the first time, I was really excited about it and believe me, she didn't disappoint me! FLOOR JANSEN!!!!! What a performance!!! I wasn't convinced of her capacity as a lead vocalist, since she mostly had been a backup singer- she notably participated in many Arjen Anthony Lucassen's project including the amazing Star One... Let me tell you this... I don't have doubts anymore and i'm not scared for Nightwish anymore... Tarja Turunen will be missed, that's for sur, but Floor will give the band the panache it deserves...

As of the rest of the show, it was simply amazing. A balanced set list between ReVamp and Wild Card albums and a breath-taking energy! The guitar playing and showmanship of both axemen Arjen Rijnen and Jord Otto was simply godlike! No mistakes and filled with virtuosity worth the praise of all the greats of this art!

To sum up: Floor Jansen has succeded on keeping the audience on edge all the remaining of the sadly too short show from this new but very promising band! Can't wait to see them again as headliners!

Sabaton:

Joakim Broden: Vox
Thobbe Englund: Guitar
Chris Rörland: Guitar
Par Sundström: Bass
Hannes Van Dahl: Drums

Sabaton needs no introduction anymore, since those veterans of the swedish metal scene have proved themselves long ago... Tonight I was seeing them on stage for the first time and I have to say I was happily surprised... The  «manly» side of the band made me laugh a lot... You know this ballsy metal that sometimes makes me think of the good old days of Accept and their hymn Balls to the wall... ! The humoristic side of our pupils made me smile: The character of singer Joakim Broden is charming and gathering with his kicks in the air and his splits a la Yngwie Malmsteen, is always well received. The front stage trio of bassiste Par Sundstrom and both guitarists Thobbe Englund and Chris Rorland was very impressive. And what can I say about their fatigues pants that matched their guitar and bass straps!

Sabaton is evidently not grinding their show anymore: these guys know what they are doing and do it with passion. They delivered a very well balanced set list between their biggest hits (40:1 - Primo Victoria) and some more recent material (the single from their upcoming album to be coming out in may, To Hell and Back, was very well received). Notable Fact: Just before the last song, Joakim has made some kids get on stage and gave them some souvenirs: his sun glasses, and a wristband a very gentleman act that needed to be mentioned!

A band to see and see again; a very entertaining and complete show!

Iced Earth

Stu Block: Vox
Troy Seele: Lead Guitar
Jon Schaffer: Lead and Rhythm Guitar
Luke Appleton: Bass
Jon Dette: Drums

Right at the first seconds, right at the first sounds we knew who we were dealing with: the Iced Earth machine, leaded by the great Jon Schaffer... and the commander trained his troops well: a heavy sound, no mistakes, and no flaws in the performance.

After all this machine is at its third solid line up. After Matt Barlow and Tim Ripper Owens, we now have Stu Block. Being a ferocious Barlow fan, I was pretty disappointed by Owens's performance even if I simply adored him with Judas Priest and even as a solo artist... The Plagues of Babylon album leans more towards the Matt Barlow era and I was impatient to see how Stu would adapt to the old songs... You know the ones from the Gene Adams and John Greely eras... I can only say this: Mission accomplished... Stu Block's charisma, energy and joy of living can't leave anybody indifferent. Block has fun and makes sure everybody has fun with him.

The set list though was a little poor. I would've liked to hear a little more songs from Plagues of Babylon, and I was disappointed of not hearing at least one song from Burnt Offerings... Even Last December would've made me happy... and where was Stormrider, Travel in Stygian and The Last Laugh? Ah well. At least they played Burning Times and Watching over Me and the interpretation was excellent!

Other down side: The sound was horrible at the balcony. The whole evening I didn’t hear one of Troy Seeele's solo and many times I couldn't even hear Stu Block's voice which is inexcusable for a band of this fame. But this little detail didn't keep me from appreciating this great concert to its fullest and to have an awesome evening with this well-oiled machine.

Conclusion:

An awesome metal night like we don't see often. No fights, no problems whatsoever just a gang of friends having fun! Three solid bands, three great shows: a very memorable night that will stay carved in my memory!

With that said, thanks a lot for reading my column and stay metalheads!

A special thanks to Evenko to get this show in Montreal and also to Nikki law
of Century Media.

Cheers!
