Dragonforce and Kamelot show
Metropolis, Saturday, May 2, 2015
Article by Mélanie Goulet
Québec Métal

Saturday, May 2 was held a very good show for the metal fan who loves and eats Power Metal.  Dragonforce from England and Kamelot from the United States gathered on stage, promising us a crazy evening. Maybe because Def Leppard was playing at the Bell Centre, the Metropolis was not packed as I have seen it before. The balcony was closed for there to have enough people on the ground floor and it was not full to the bottom. As against the crowd was dense near the stage and the audience was very enthusiastic and participatory. The fans have not given the impression that the room was not full to musicians by making enough noise and answering the artists call.

Dragonforce made an entry into force on scene starting with Fury of the Storm. From the first notes, the 6 musicians of this group took the stage in assault with their turbulent energy which they kept until the end of their performance that lasted nearly 50 minutes. The singer, Marc Hudson, is heavily involved by inviting the public to jump or lift the fist. Guitarist, Herman Li, keeps jumping, turning in the air as a Kung Fu champion. The other guitarist, Sam Totman, is challenging his fellow jumping everywhere too.  Bassist, Frédéric Leclercq, keeps walking along the stage and the keyboardist, Vadim Pruzhadov, makes acrobatics with his keyboard and comes to the front of the stage with his keytar to support the other musicians.  The new drummer, Gee Anzalone, meanwhile, plays at lightning speed.

It was a show full of energy as you can see by reading his lines. Dragonforce is known for the speed with which his songs are played.  Not only the band plays at 100 miles per hour, but in addition, it plays well.  Each group member is a virtuoso in itself.  Listening to them, I thought that Mozart had to turn in his grave thinking he was well over!  Dragonforce also played songs from their new album, Maximum Overload, including The Game, who appears to be the fastest song it did.  As before the last song, the band played a superb adaptation of the classical Johnny Cash song, Ring of Fire, before moving with their dazzling finale. Indeed, by playing Through Fire and Flame, the band made the fans more than satisfied, especially as the guitarist Herman Li came to play on one of the bars and Vadim, the keyboardist, was playing on the other bar.  In the end, Mark, the singer, did a little body surfing in the crowd before starting his last notes in a fairly high pitch worthy of his vocal ability.  It is clear that the fans that came to see Dragonforce were largely filled with such a performance. The group also announced the release of their DVD In the Line of Fire that you could buy on site in addition to their CD.

Kamelot arrived on stage with a light game introducing us members one by one on a melodic and epic musical score worthy of the bands style, giving us an idea of the flavor of the show. The fans all wearing the shirt with the image of the group were screaming in happiness. The group began with Rule the World and Ghost Opera which immediately charmed the audience. The new singer, Tommy Karevick, imposes his strong and lyrical voice. He has a beautiful stage presence and looks like a modern knight. A very thoughtful style, in the image of the group that often has compositions treating of fantasy and medieval. He is accompanied by a choir singer making the mood of the music even more ephemeral. Several fans were disappointed that the choir singer was not Alyssa White Guz, as it has already been the case, but this backup singer was still very good. The guitarist, Thomas Yongblood, which is a founding member and the only one left, came to speak to the public with a Quebec flag bearing the name of the band to the delight of the fans. The flag also remained on stage for the whole show.

Kamelot, with its excellent musicality and very successful symphonic arrangements delighted the audience and this one welcomed all of the singer requests.  Whether it was hand clapping, launching Hey! or turning the cell light on for accompanying the ballad Song For Jolee, fans have reflected their love for this great band and their music.  Almost everyone in the place was singing the lyrics with Tommy.  It must be said that this group forms an excellent gear of musicians.  The drummer, Casey Grillo, has a very impressive set and I was happy to see him at work for a rather spectacular solo.  Sean Tibet, at the bass, is impressive with his long hair roving the air and his fingers going fast on the handle of his instrument.  Thomas Yongblood always gives us his superb melodic guitar riffs and the excellent keyboardist, Oliver Palotai, transports us into a world on the edge of dream and brings the atmosphere to the group.  Kamelot performed songs from their latest album, Heaven, which is not officially released yet, but we could buy the CD that night. The new songs were well made and well received by people.

The light game throughout the show was superb and was giving sense to the mood of the music. Sometimes darker for songs like The Great Pendemonium and Ghost Opera and more vivid for songs like Revolution and Sacrimony. The band finished with the famous song March of Mephisto which ended well this beautiful evening.  People were happy and the stars glittered in their eyes at the exit of the Metropolis.  Effect of great music on the souls!
