What happens when Russia encounter the Netherlands and the United States? I'm not talking about soccer, but metal music. Well, it gives an epic heathen Viking metal show. Effectively as the before last show, BCI (Brave Concert International), offered us a band that comes from afar, that is to say, Russia, and this is the sublime band Arkona. This band was accompanied by Heidevolk, from the Netherlands, Helsótt and The Dreadcrew of Oddwood, both from the United States. There were many fans at Petit Campus, although it was a Wednesday night. Many people are preparing to bid farewell to the promoter who helped greatly in the metal scene for the past 21 years. It was a pleasant evening, although it ended late.

The evening began at 8 pm with The Dreadcrew of Oddwood. I've seen this band last winter with Alestorm, so I knew that this one would bring the party in the house. It includes six musicians, all hyper dynamics. Dressed as pirates and in their role from beginning to end, they give us an acoustic folk music, relative to, you guessed it, piracy. Their songs are original and unusual. Whether the song which chronicles a battle between pirates and zombies. Zombies? Why not. Or the song in which the musicians sing their adventure of how they stole an airship to the Nazis, the music flows well. The six musicians have a superb synergy between them and the theatrical staging of their show is really pleasant. They keep the public reactive throughout their set and like to make them laugh. The Flutist plays the flute with his nostril while the mandolin player plays a solo with his instrument behind his head. There is also an accordionist, a bassist, a drummer on a small drum kit and a keyboardist, playing with a toy keyboard attached to his body with braids, which sounds like a xylophone. The Dreadcrew of Oddwood gave a super lively show.

The American group Helsótt began his show with a small staging to continue with their pagan metal style songs. The flutist, who also does the clear vocals, seems a little motionless beside her acolytes that are all smiling. She became less shy after 2 or 3 songs. The band makes catchy and melodic music with the use of the flute.Their themes deal with everything in relation to the pagan world. Whether it is the Greek, Celtic or Scandinavian mythology. Musically, it is a blend of Folk, Death and Symphonic Metal. The group is also composed of six musicians, but there is less action on the stage as the previous band. Despite this, the band members have ensured that the public remained active and the latter broke loose in the mosh pit.

The evening continued with the Dutch band Heidevolk. This band is particular with Dutch lyrics performed by two men who sing in duet. The band toured extensively in Europe, but it has not often performed in Canada. The band members have repeatedly mentioned that they were happy to be in Montreal. They even managed to say a few words in French. The Quebec metalheads public always like when band members speak our native language, especially if it is to use our bad words. The audience was eager to see this band of six nice musicians. Their melodic songs with symphonic aspect are smooth and pleasant for listening. They are just as dynamic and exciting. Something to bring the party in the place. In addition, the jolly fellows are equipped with a sleeveless leather jacket and all have a viking look. They perform their songs in a divine way and with great pleasure on stage. They made their mandate by making the crowd constantly cheerful.

With a good delay, Arkona appeared on stage with Yav song from their latest album. Immediately, the audience was transported into the intense world of the Russian band. Like their music, the musicians demonstrate boundless intensity. They are five musicians and they have an incredible stage presence. Especially for Masha, the singer, who is mesmerizing. She can spend 1 minute without moving in the same pose and keeping intensity in her body. She is really captivating and keeps her enthusiasm until the end of the show. Passion, she has and she goes unleashed with her microphone stand which almost got into the photographers lens in front of the stage. The charming photographer for BCI, Myriam Francoeur, seems to have seen her microphone stand very closely several times. Masha's voice is powerful and emotionally charged. She uses scream or clean vocals, it always remains vibrant. The guitarist plays solid and dark riffs while being melodic and very rhythmic and the bass is very present. The drum is effective to make us feel the intensity of the band's compositions. Vladimir "Volk" has shown his artistic talents as a multi- instrumentalist. He handles all the folk instruments, he passes from the flute to the bagpipe and masters it all very well. The audience was on fire and the mosh pit soon became big enough especially during the Goi, Rhode, Goi or Stenka na stenku songs. Many have lent their voices to accompany Masha during the beautiful song Slavsya Rus, although the lyrics are in Russian. Arkona's music transports us into a universe of epic compositions very good artistically. The band also has an interesting scene setting. The musicians are dressed in the pagan way and the scene is equipped with flags emblazoned with images of the last album. Arkona show is a memorable one. It was a beautiful and intense show.
