Quel bon spectacle!!

Conquerors of the World 2015 Show
Deathstars, Moonspell, SepticFlesh

Québec Métal

The Conquerors of the World 2015 tour including Deathstars, Moonspell and SepticFlesh stopped in Montreal through BCI who had the ingenious idea to invite them. The evening promised a very nice atmosphere with symphonic and Gothic music. I was very excited about being there being an old fan of Gothic music and a fan of these groups in particular for ScepticFlesh.

The Swedish band Deathstars opened the evening. It is the first time the group comes to Canada and its members seem to like Montreal a lot. I had heard from a reliable source, of which I will not reveal the identity, that the group members have spent the afternoon drinking microbrewery beer and strolled around the Formula 1 track. So these are very cheerful and a bit tipsy musicians who appeared on stage displaying all beautiful smiles. Deathstars makes music in the industrial Gothic Metal style with a good groove in the influences of Rammstein. The singer, Whiplasher Bernadotte, displays a teasing smile with his mysterious eyes, and automatically charms the crowd, which included many girls. Rather unusual for a metal show! He takes the time to interact with fans, give them the hand and even borrows a corporal cap whose group often use in their stage costumes, to continue to do his songs. The bassist, Jonas Kangur, better known with his stage name, Skinny Disco, interacts a lot with the crowd too. He is very dynamic and shakes his long hair at the same time he masters his bass.

Deathstars played songs from their various albums and several from their latest album, The Perfect Cult (2014) and has well launched the ball. Several fans gathered in front of the stage, dressed in honor of the band and danced while singing the lyrics with Whiplasher which is also accompanied by guitarist, Emil "Nightmare Industries" Nödtveidt and drummer, Oscar "Vice" Leander.  The music of Deathstars was superbly rendered and it was a very good show. The group started well the evening and fans were delighted. We could see the guys from the band near the bar during the presentations of Moonspell and SepticFlesh ready to talk with their fans. They are very friendly.

Moonspell came on stage in a twilight announcing the darker side of the music of this group. This one was actually a Black Metal band before it appropriated itself the Atmospheric Metal and the Gothic Metal style. The group exists since 1992 and celebrates its 22 years of existence. It has several albums (11 to be precise + Eps and singles) and it experience as musicians pierces the scene. Although the stage is small, the group forced himself to have a decor. In addition to displaying a large flag with the artistic image of their latest album, an organ pipes structure was present right from the stage and was the basis for the keyboardist’s keyboard. We automatically entered a more macabre and vampiric atmosphere. The singer Fernando Ribeiro has, in fact, a sort of vampire presence. While he sings his notes, using both clean, but deep vocal and growl for some songs, he seems possessed by the villain or other dark creatures. He makes his incantations bringing us on the dark side of the force with him. Fernando has a great stage presence and even addressed the crowd in French. Every member of the group are smiling and sweating their passion for their music. The guitarist, Ricardo Amorim, plays melodic riffs with a penchant for darker tones. The bassist, Aires Pereira, plays a heavy and quite present bass. The keyboardist, Pedro Ribeiro, who has a bit hidden behind its structure, brings beautiful atmospheric arrangements and encourages the crowd to raise their fists when he has a free hand. The drummer, Miguel Gaspar, adjusts to the different rhythms of the group. Going to more intense stuff for pieces with Death Metal influences to more textured rhythms for the most atmospheric pieces. The registry of Moonspell is quite wide and the group has dipped into its range of songs, even playing songs from their album, Irregilious from 1996. But most of the songs chosen for this tour are from their latest album, Extinct, released in March 2015.

Throughout their show, Moonspell kept us attentive, always interacting with the crowd and keeping their energy to the end. During those 45 minutes, we were transported into the underworld to rise from it well impregnated. Their music on CD may seem less exciting sometimes, but live, this group manages to keep the audience's attention by their beautiful stage presence, especially for Fernando who is very charismatic. It was a very good show from start to finish.

In a perfect sequence, after the superb performances of Deathstars and Moonspell, Septicflesh made his entrance on stage on the song War in Heaven soon leading us in a sublime intensity. The public is well warmed and unglazed despite the smallness of the crowd. The place was never full that evening, but fans are participating at 100% and the atmosphere is magical.

SepticFlesh is a Greek band and their composition is unique of its kind. It is a symphonic and atmospheric Death Metal band. It is difficult to compare it to other groups as it has a sound of its own. Fans of Dimmu Borgir, like myself, find some similarities between the two bands for the dark side, the intensity and symphonic aspects, but there is a difference between the sound of these two groups anyway.

SepticFlesh has also forced himself for the decor. With a big flag and two banners on each side of the stage, the group plunges us into a dark atmosphere of worship. On another note, the flag and banners are drawings of the singer, Seth Siro Anton. He is also the one that draws the art on the flag of Moonspell and on CD covers for Moonspell, SepticFlesh and other groups like Old Man Child, Soilwork, Vader and Kamelot.

The band played mostly songs from their latest album, Titan (2014) and from the two albums before; The Great Mass (2011) and Communion (2008). With songs like Communion, Burn, Prometheus and The Vampire from Nazareth, the singer and bassist, Seth Siro Anton, invites us to do head banging and the audience is happy to do so.  The guitarist, Christo "Chris" Antoniou makes great melodic, dark and very intense riffs. He also composes the orchestral arrangements for the songs. We can recognize his style with its heavy and filled melodies. The second guitarist, Sotiris Vayenas, harmonizes perfectly with his colleague and brings an additional layer of melody with his guitar and his voice for clean vocals. The new drummer, Keri "Khrimh" Lechner, who was introduced to us by Seth as a new member of the family at the end of the show, played with Decapited and Behemoth. He plays on his artillery to perfection. We hear all his drumsticks shots on the drum, his rhythms are very present and bring the dramatic atmosphere of the music of Septicflesh.

Seth has continued to address the crowd during the show, inviting people to make head bang on his tally in a mosh pit that was admittedly small, but very present. Seth's singing is entrancing, intense and well-rounded throughout the show. While launching his rage to our face, he plays fat and expressive notes on his bass. He is very present, posed and has his place on a stage.

I was very pleased with the songs played by the band this evening. There were no down moments, only powerful music. The intensity of the music of Septicflesh delighted the crowd and there are not many people who were not proudly lifting the Horns to follow the musicians. After an encore, the musicians left the stage with a smile promising us a return to Montreal. What a great show!!
