Although the Jazz Festival was at the heart of things to do for the weekend, many people went to the Katacombes for the 2015 Viking Fest which hosted five groups. The evening promised to be perfect with Epic Folk Metal and Viking Metal bands. In addition, there was a free BBQ before the show to fully supply the Vikings before going into battle. Some people were dressed as Vikings and carried a horn to drink their beer ready for Valhalla.
The first group called The Wild Hunt is from Montreal and makes compositions in the Viking Melodic Death Metal style. The four musicians well managed to make things shake up in the crowd, although there are not many people yet. The atmosphere was nonetheless already very festive and the very energetic music of The Wild Hunt has certainly helped to put people in the party.

The band Distoriam, also from Montreal followed.  They are 7 musicians on the small stage of the Katacombes and they are very dynamic. If you're still not in the mood; with this group on the scene, you will be, guaranteed.  Distoriam Folk Epic Metal music makes you want to move. With several instruments, from the accordion to the mandolin, the band knows how to orchestrate and the unison among group members is very good. The singer often addresses the crowd and makes jokes making the public comfortable.  The mandolin player walks around with his instrument, inviting people to trash with him.  It was a very good performance, especially nice to look at because the musicians are dressed in costume and have a good staging for their show. After their passage, the party is well started in the place.

AETHER REALM, from the US, then took possession of the stage with a slight delay of 15 minutes, to have time to prepare their set. The band decided to play almost in the dark, so we did not quite see the musicians on stage. The fact that the room was in darkness, and that the band consists of only three musicians, created a big contrast with Distoriam who played just before. According to me, it slows the pulse of the evening a bit. As against the band's music in the Viking Metal style is very well composed. Their songs have a beautiful orchestration and a beautiful sound with symphonic allure.

Valfreya made its entrance on an epic soundtrack introducing us the musical style of this group from Montreal. When the musicians really started to play, the crowd has caught on fire. Valfreya music is very energetic and its musicians very active. It is impossible not to tap your foot in the presence of the group on stage. Their energy is quite grandiose and spreads to the bottom of the square. The singer, Crook, interacts extensively with her fans and has a beautiful charisma on stage. In addition, her colored hair gives a dramatic effect when she engages some head bang, that is to say often.  All band members are dressed in costume and take their place on the stage.  The keyboardist, Shark, is on his part, on the balcony just above the stage, but we feel his presence.  He brings the epic atmosphere of the symphonic metal style compositions to the group. The guitarists, Karhu and Grazzt, perform stunning riffs while being very dynamic. The bassist, Arbic and drummer, Jotsunn, contribute to the fiery rhythms of the songs which are very catchy. The voice of Crook can compete with any experienced singe.  She switches from a good rounded clean voice to a deep growl effortlessly. She has a pretty amazing voice range and never seems to get tired.  She even comes in the crowd for jigging with the crowd. The fans did not have to be begged to participate.
Valfreya presented two songs from their upcoming albums, one in French, which is called Peuple du Nord. This will be the band's second album. The first, Path to Eternity, released in 2012 was well received and allowed the group to make several fans. We can hope that the second will be as well received.

The group obviously finished its set with the song Confront. As is the tradition in the Valfreya shows, a Wall of Death was held, with a fight with Styrofoam swords, provides on-site. Nothing better to set the mood.  Almost everyone participated. It was epic! What a great performance by this superb group of musicians.

The American group WildeRun stormed the stage to the pleasure of many fans. This is the first visit of this group from Boston in Canada. The members seemed delighted to play in Montreal for the first time. I often hear international metal bands say that Montreal as the best crowd. I don’t know if they say this in every town, but hey, it's always flattering to be told that we are the best crowd ever!  Wilderun set up the scene his own way.  It has its own set of light and controls its soundtracks on site. The group makes compositions in the Symphonic Folk Metal style with Progressive Metal sound. It reminded me a bit of Ensiferum, but the group has its own style. Their songs speak of folk and the American tradition. They are Evan Anderson Berry on vocals and guitar and mandolin, Daniel Müller on bass and backing vocals, Jonathan Teachey on drums and Wayne Ingram on guitar and back vocals. The group has existed since 2008, but became an active group in 2012. Wilderun has two albums to its credit. One released in 2012, Olden Tales & Trails Deatly and one that just came out, Sleep at the Edge of the Earth.

The band played tracks from the two albums and the fans were happy to sing with Evan. The atmosphere was friendly and there was a carnival atmosphere. The game of light created by the group is very well thought out and follows the rhythm of their music. That brings more to the show. The scene is interesting to watch, despite the musicians do not move that much. It's normal when dealing with more complex riffs and rhythms as is the case with music of Wilderun. Their songs were well executed and we can see that the musicians master their art well. Although there was a small technical problem after the second song, the group has kept his fans in a state of constant ecstasy. It was another great performance that concluded the evening in the style of an epic Viking feast.
